About Amicale Française

Amicale is perfect for anyone who enjoys French, friendship, fun and food! Always well prepared, well presented and informative - we love it.
Marion, Burgess Hill

Many members of Amicale Française have been part of it since the very first year. A typical Saturday morning meeting welcomes over 70 of our 90 members. Most of our members live in Littlehampton, Worthing, Lancing, Shoreham or Southwick but some people come from considerably further afield - Burgess Hill, Brighton, Peacehaven or even Reading & Highgate, London - for Amicale Française is an unusual mixture of language class and forum for information about all matters French in a relaxed atmosphere.

We are always delighted to welcome visitors to our French Club in Worthing, who often become fully fledged members in no time!

Though Amicale Française is not intended for the absolute beginner in French, it caters for a wide range of ability and experience. Each session opens with language tasks, where more confident linguists help the less experienced. The talks are in French but a certain amount of help is given with unfamiliar vocabulary. Vocabulary and comprehension sheets are supplied to everyone, by email in advance or on the day, at the meeting.

The last part of every meeting is devoted to a 30 minute talk in French on some aspect of French life. Recent meetings have included talks on "Un Voyage vers l'Inconnu - Souvenirs du Burundi", Clermont Ferrand, St-Exupéry, la Pâtisserie en France, Charlemagne, Gabriel Fauré, Nîmes et Alphonse Daudet, Georges-Eugène Haussmann and "Les Huîtres". Speakers have included Brigitte Kenworthy, Pat Brook, Carole Noble, Linda Podlasinska, Pat Able, Catherine Doidge, Isabelle Jackson, Adeline Saurin, Catherine Dennistoun and Isabelle Tarbet.

Amicale Française meets on the first Saturday of October, November, December, February, March, May and June from 10.00 until 12.00.

Amicale Française is run by a team comprising Catherine Doidge, Pat Able, Christopher Doidge and Donald Elkin who between them have a wide experience of French teaching and learning, while our regular helpers Linda and Geoff Davis and Pam and Ian Martin ensure the smooth running of each session. Guest speakers are either native French or teachers from Sussex secondary or higher education.
